Rumba Cafe! Adam’s Morgan area in Washington D.C. - the food is good, the mojitos are great, but the service was mediocre. Huevos rancheros, an omelet with fruit and potatoes… and I forget what I had but it was like fried plantains on the bottom with two poached eggs and tomato sauce. Add a side of perfectly crunchy potatoes, sour cream, slice of avocado and diced tomatoes.
Looking at the website now, I also feel like we must’ve went somewhere else… the site portrays an establishment of a completely different nature! Well, we were there for brunch on a Saturday morning (apparently it’s a DC thing: brunch)… but that happy hour sure makes a difference. A $9 mojito versus a $5 happy hour mojito?! Yeesh. Next time, Patrick, I think we need to meet at happy hour rather!

Brian had found this so-called tapioca heaven long before I visited during my birthday trip. First day in San Francisco, he took me up to the Richmond area to experience this long awaited bubble journey.

A couple months ago, I visited my friend Adrian and his girlfriend Naomi, out in Oakland. It was a beautiful day so we decided to walk up to 40th Street in Oakland for lunch - Homeroom. A fresh, airy joint specializing in mac and cheese… mmm.
Before I left for my San Francisco trip over Memorial Day weekend, Trish mentioned the Buena Vista Cafe - best Irish coffees, hands down. She even mentioned a story about her trip to the Jameson distillery (in Ireland!) and how the bartender there asked her to compare a true Irish-served Irish coffee with that of Buena Vista’s. Trish said Buena Vista was better. So, I dragged Theresa with me onto the F train. We walked up to the cafe after a leisurely stroll through Fisherman’s Wharf for clam chowder (of course).
The verdict? It was good, but I don’t have much to compare from past experiences. At $9 a cup with all that hype, I would have been extremely disappointed if it wasn’t at least good though.
However, I think a trip to Jameson’s is needed. Theresa - let’s go!
A few weeks ago, Chi took me out for a birthday lunch at Sea Salt. Here’s a little taste of the place to wet the taste buds…

We had the Fiorentina pizza: Clifford Farms Eggs, Black Truffle, Arugula, Prosciutto di Parma.

The gooey eggs are yum yum with the freshly carved prosciutto.

And we also had the Gnocchi alla Norma - Eggplant Fritti, Fresh Mozzarella, Campari Tomato, Garlic, Basil.

Pillowy goodness. MMM.

Another Sundance Film Festival down - always a busy but enjoyable time. It’s always hard to find really great food during the fest… especially when you are working and partying simultaneously for hours on end with no sleep.
Well, I think Forage is always impressive to the likes of big city out-of-towners. So after hyping up Forage to my new foodie friend, she booked reservations and sent me this note:
Ok - so I booked a table at Forage for Thursday night at 8.15pm. After you talked me into it - you better make time to eat with us that night!
We ended up getting earlier reservations, but anyhoo - here’s the rundown of our meal that night. A Sundance escape… as my co-diners mentioned in the restaurant, “I don’t even feel like I’m in Utah right now.”
What better way than to celebrate a giant Thanksgiving meal than another incredibly delicious meal at Forage? Our menu for the night…

Uh Huh Her toured out to Salt Lake City again this year - charitably this time. You may have seen those “I love boobies” bracelets and other swaggy gear - all that and more was much-a-present at the Urban Lounge, October 30, 2011 for the Keep A Breast tour with UHH and featuring Jarrod Gorbel.
Oh, I’m sure it never hurts to do a bit of cross-promotion since UHH just released an album as well - Nocturnes.

This is probably one of my favorite hikes so far - Angel Slot Canyon near the Dirty Devil area. Fairly easy (but may first be intimidating) rappels that are juicy beefy! True slot canyon squeezes that require some technical maneuvering… Oh and hey, it’s not too long! It’s another 3-4 hour, or in our case… 5-6 hour hike that’s less than 3-4 miles round trip.

Fall approaches with rain and cool weather. We found one last hurrah at Dirty Devil - near Hanksville, Utah (and the Robber’s Roost and North Wash canyoneering area).
Our first canyon - Angel Cove! The site is south of Hanksville, off some dirt paths. GPS is greatly helpful out here where dirt roads are king. There are only a few signs and people are fairly scarce in these neck of the… dessert. Here’s a handy route for reference: trimbleoutdoors.com.
